Baptism marks the start of our Christian initiation, welcomes us into the Body of Christ,
the Church, and calls us to share in her mission. Through Baptism, we are reborn into
Christ Jesus, called into new life with Him, and freed from the bonds of sin.
Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit,
and the door which gives access to the other sacraments.
(Catechism of the Catholic Church 1213)
Though some people are baptized as adults, most Catholics receive Baptism as young children. This is referred to as “infant baptism.”
Parents’ decision to have their child baptized by a priest or a deacon of their parish is an act of true love toward their child. Baptism allows the child to be welcomed into the Church at an early age, and to grow in the love and grace of God in a very special way. In the Gospels, Jesus says that to love God one must love as children do. Baptism, hence, is a gift from the parents who wish for their child to grow in the knowledge of God and as part of the Christian community, and for their child to have the support of godparents as guides in the faith.
Children who have reached the age of seven and have not been baptized are invited into the process of Christian initiation based on the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) adapted to the age and needs of each child. This process will prepare young people and their families for the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist and possibly Confirmation and For more information, please contact the Director of Faith Formation, Tommy Cordova at 713-869-3783.
Although there is no set fee, it is customary on the occasion of a Baptism to make an offering to the church to help support parish ministries or to the Priest or Deacon performing the rite. You may want to do this online or in person on the day of the Baptism.
Families are asked to reach out to our Baptism Coordinator, Kendall Solé, to inquire about Baptism arrangements at k.sole@sttheresa.cc or 346-335-1831. We ask that you complete a Baptism Request Form and submit the child’s birth certificate. Please include Godparent information. The Church requires that there be at least one godparent (sponsor) who is baptized, confirmed, and in good standing with the Catholic Church. In addition, the family may also choose a second godparent of the opposite sex. If this second person is baptized, but not Catholic, then this sponsor will stand as a “Christian Witness.” Please click on the link to the Baptism FAQ below for more information.
Baptism FAQ
Prior to Baptism, parents, and godparents are asked to participate in a Baptism Reflection seminar directly following the 10:00 a.m. Mass where a baptism will be celebrated. Currently, these are held every third Sunday of the month in Fellowship Hall. Register here for all classes in 2023 by designating the month that you plan to attend. *Note: we will not have Baptism Prep classes in JUNE, 2023.
Baptisms are celebrated the 3rd weekend of the month. On Saturday morning at 10 am we celebrate a Rite of Baptism only (no Mass). We also celebrate Baptisms during any Mass (5 PM Saturday Vigil, 10 AM or 5:30 PM Sunday). If you need to schedule an Individual Baptism, you may reach out directly to Fr. Phil or one of our Deacons to coordinate a date that works for your family and their calendar.

After Baptism, we at St. Theresa, seek to help parents and godparents build a spiritual foundation in each newly baptized child that will last a lifetime. Through St. Theresa’s children’s ministry, Little Flowers Nursery and Children’s Liturgy of the Word, we invite you all to come and learn and share your gifts:
Little by little, day by day,
growing in faith in our own little way!
